DSD March 6, 2018: "Above & Behind" - Shae District

Shaun Cordingley

Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music!

Above & Behind - Shae District

I have been striving to get a bit more indie electronic into the Daily Song Drop, so today we are going to talk about Chicago based duo Andrew Parpart and Debjit Das AKA Shae District and their recent release "Above & Behind", which you can check out below:

I love that "Above & Behind" does not pull any punches--this is a deep, emotional track that has a real sense of space, and tempo that takes you on a journey. The trap that a lot of indie electronic falls into is that it repetitively lapses in on itself (or is just so cliched that you feel you've heard a "new" song before), but Shae District have none of those issues here--this track is dynamic, shifting feelings, adding and subtracting layers of instrumentation to give the beat life, and feels weighty, and while you might not feel like you need to move right away, I know for a fact that if I were still spinning sets, "Above & Behind" would be in high rotation on late night gigs.
This is a track that must be an absolute joy to listen to live in a big group of people, in a dark space, punched by DJ'd lights.

Yep, just made myself miss Dj'ing a lot.
Damn.

Honestly, if you are looking for more Shae District, I think the best thing you could do (failing going to check them out live) is to head to that link above and check out some of their live sets...because yes. All the yes.
If you are in to EDM, be sure to keep an eye on these lads--sound like this they are definitely going places.

The February 2018 DSD Apple Music List and February 2018 DSD Spotify List are available! These ones where admittedly tricky as it is a short month (meaning there are fewer songs for me to build the set with), and we are also missing a couple from the lists: "Coward's Castle" by Monti and "highr" by buuzey. However, I have to say that I do enjoy the playlist this month, and I hope you will check it out (at the links above), and share it with your friends!

If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!

See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.

Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
