DSD February 19, 2018: "Playground Sweethearts" - Joshua KYEOT

Shaun Cordingley

Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music!

Playground Sweethearts - Joshua KYEOT

Today, starting our week off here on the Daily Song Drop, we have the latest single from British-Ghanaian indie soul/r&b artist Joshua KYEOT called "Playground Sweethearts"

Check the track out below:

This is such a sweet song; KYEOT has such a grounded, soulful voice that just amplifies his lyrics in a way that gives them a real, emotional weight that is so very easy to connect to. "Playground Sweethearts" is (according to KYEOT himself)

ABOUT A BOY WHO WAS ONCE TOO SHY TO EXPRESS HIS FEELINGS TO A GIRL HE KNEW WHEN HE WAS MUCH YOUNGER. HE HAS MET HER A BIT LATER ON LIFE AND HAS REGRETS, AND IS TIRED OF REGRETTING, SO HE IS DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THAT.

Just try and tell me that there is a single one of us out there (myself included) that cannot connect with (or at least get the feeling of) what is going on in this track.  Couple that with perfectly placed, chill acoustic guitar, and a soft, lounge-y musical backdrop, and you have a soft, non-cliched song about taking those first steps into what can be a completely fulfilling relationship, that once felt lost. I think my favourite part of "Playground Sweethearts" is when KYEOT injects an electric guitar solo in the perfect place lyrically, like the spark of love kicking into gear.

If this is your first introduction to Joshua KYEOT, be sure to check out his other single, "Only One", and if you're lucky enough to be around London, maybe try and catch a show of his live (so you can let me know how he is live, because I feel like it would be a great, mellow evening).

As promised, here are the January 2018 Apple Music Playlist, and the January 2018 Spotify Playlist for the Daily Song Drop. It seems like we are starting off the month with the traditional "one song is missing" (that being "Board It Up" by Nekokat), but all in all it's a pretty fun list to start the year off!
Plus it was not the usual soul-murdering December/January blended list that always drove me nuts every year with its' "two months" of songs to try and fit together.
Who does that?

If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!

See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.

Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
