DSD January 10, 2018: "Board It Up" - Nekokat

Shaun Cordingley

Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop":'s song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music!

Board It Up - Nekokat

Los Angeles based indie pop rock trio Nekokat recently (as in, last week) released a new single called "Board It Up" which I just knew we needed to talk about as soon as I heard it.

Check out the track below:

What first grabbed my attention in "Board It Up" is the brilliantly Lynchian opening--this track basically starts off like Nekokat watched a whole lot of Twin Peaks and decided that they needed to make a super-fun pop rock song. The slightly echo-y 'strings' are such a clever add to this track, as they provide such a unique base to the track, that the energetic (and catchy as hell) vocals, guitar and percussion all seem to fold in around it to create a song that feels good to listen to. I'm going to be incredibly surprised if we do not hear "Board It Up" used in a very fun way in something (ad, film, has a great energy, and is very radio/playlist ready).

Plus, I felt that it was about time that we get a bit of enjoyable, high-energy indie in the DSD this month, and that is exactly what "Board It Up" is.

If you dig "Board It Up" be sure to check out some of Nekokat's earlier singles, including the very well layered "HAUNTED", or check out their 2016 EP Communication II .

For the first time ever on, here is the December Apple Music Playlist, and the December '17 Spotify Playlist! I decided that, rather than making myself crazy with a hybrid list between the two months (and thanks to the fact that I did a feature-full month) I would put this one together, which just means that the January playlist will be a tad shorter than most thanks to the TGF Top 50 Songs of 2017 (with the in countdown order Apple Music TGF Top 50 Songs of 2017 as Well as the Spotify TGF Top 50 Songs of 2017 playlists here)

If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!

See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.

Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
