DSD August 8, 2017: "Heartland" - Tom Walker
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.
Heartland - Tom Walker
Indie Alt-Soul singer/songwriter Tom Walker released a new single recently with "Heartland" (produced by Naughty Boy) and it is all sorts of wonderful.
Check out the track below:
"Heartland" is, at it's very core, a dramatically cool song; the wide combinations of instruments (strings!) and choral work in the background of Walker's vocals to give the track a scope and a swelling feeling that is incredibly rare when it comes to indie music. This song feels cinematic at it's heart (sorry...I know), without giving the impression that it is stretching beyond what it's sound allows; "Heartland" is a powerful alt-soul track which I have to recommend you give a listen to on the best sound system/headphones you have to really get the scale of what is going on.
I would actually be amazed if we do not hear "Heartland" used in television/film sooner rather than later, as it is basically ready made for the right situation.
If you're looking for more Tom Walker (which, if you enjoy indie alternative/soul, you should be), his EP Blessings came out earlier this year, and while none of the tracks every reach the scale of "Heartland", it is a very good, pulled back EP from a soulful singer/songwriter who is just starting to stretch his boundaries.
Here's the July 2017 DSD Playlist! We're missing a few tracks this month, which is sad for the Apple Music folks, but you've still got a really solid list this month (if I do say so myself, which I do...*cough*)
We are also now on Spotify! Here is the link to the July '17 Spotify List (which features 1 more track than the Apple Music list).
If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or serach for TGF on either Apple Music or Spotify!
See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!
