DSD March 5, 2018: "City Lights" - The Hollow Men

Shaun Cordingley

Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music!

City Lights - The Hollow Men

Today on the Daily Song Drop we have the latest single from indie folk singer/songwriter  Dennis Sjöström AKA The Hollow Men called "City Lights".

Check the track out below:

What I really appreciate about "City Lights" is that The Hollow Men does not just sound like your typical indie folk singer/songwriter, but rather allows elements of acoustic pop, and a deeper, more satisfying breadth of instrumentation to create something of a soundscape. I swear I am picking up hints of a cello (and more strings, though as a former cellist, I know where my heart lies) in this track, but the lush sound wraps around you like a warm sweater, and everything just feels that little bit more cozy than one thinks you would when listening to "indie folk". I love the fact that despite having listened to "City Lights" a few times now, I am still picking out new elements with every listen; this is one of those tracks that, if you are into indie folk, or are even just looking for something that bleeds the perfect amount of mellow into your day, you are going to find a lot of depth here, and it is a track that almost needs repeated listens.

If "City Lights" is your first introduction to The Hollow Men, be sure to check out some of his earlier work, with a couple of my favourites being "You" and the more traditional folk sound of "Build It Up".

The February 2018 DSD Apple Music List and February 2018 DSD Spotify List are available! These ones where admittedly tricky as it is a short month (meaning there are fewer songs for me to build the set with), and we are also missing a couple from the lists: "Coward's Castle" by Monti and "highr" by buuzey. However, I have to say that I do enjoy the playlist this month, and I hope you will check it out (at the links above), and share it with your friends!

If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!

See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.

Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
