DSD February 13, 2018: "Angel" - Call Me Karizma

Shaun Cordingley

Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music

Angel - Call Me Karizma

Today on the Daily Song Drop we have an engaging as hell alt-pop song, on an important subject, from Minneapolis-based artist Call Me Karizma called "Angel".

Check the track out below:

The opening guitar riff is really quite excellent in setting expectations for "Angel", which Call Me Karizma breaks pretty much immediately by infusing the track with hip hop elements (the verse structure and beat for example). The two different feels blend together very well and by the time you get to the strong, choral heavy chorus', "Angel" has wormed its' way into your head in a way that only the best alt-pop can.

"Angel" is particularly poignant because it lyrically encapsulates the really hard side of depression (and suicidal depression) without making light of it, or sensationalizing it--this feels like a track that at any of our lowest points (including mine), thoughts like these have never been too far away.

That said, if you are struggling, this is also about choosing life, and remembering that you do matter,

If you really need someone to talk to, my Twitter is always linked at the bottom (and right here), or hit me up via email (button on the top of the page,) or instagram (@theguysfrom , or @the_darkhalf

If this is your first introduction to Call Me Karizma and you're looking for more sweet alt-pop with hip hop elements, then you have quite a pile of singles to check out, with a couple of my other favourites being "ctrl + alt + del" and "i got u"

As promised, here are the January 2018 Apple Music Playlist, and the January 2018 Spotify Playlist for the Daily Song Drop. It seems like we are starting off the month with the traditional "one song is missing" (that being "Board It Up" by Nekokat), but all in all it's a pretty fun list to start the year off!
Plus it was not the usual soul-murdering December/January blended list that always drove me nuts every year with its' "two months" of songs to try and fit together.
Who does that?

If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!

See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.

Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
