DSD January 19, 2018: "Sign" - Joe Hicks

Shaun Cordingley

Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music!

Sign - Joe Hicks

Wrapping up this week on the Daily Song Drop we have a wonderfully chill indie folk track from UK indie singer/songwriter Joe Hicks.

Check out "Sign" below:

I really appreciate how simple "Sign" is, relying largely on a Hicks' wonderful voice, a soft bit of piano and percussion, and the occasional guitar flourish, but everything just fits around the vocals to present them as heartfelt and grounded--this is a track that while you are listening to it, it almost feels like you are sitting in a small, cozy club somewhere, wrapped in a warm sweater, and just listening to a great singer/songwriter at work. "Sign" is by far Hicks' most intimate feeling track, and it works for his sound incredibly well, and I hope that he does write more sweet, spare, folksy ballads in the future.

That said, however, I do have to recommend (if this is your first introduction to Joe Hicks' music) that you check out a few of his other tracks, because he has released some very excellent music in this past year, including the more upbeat, soft pop-rock style "Burning", or check out the charming title track from his 2017 EP Talk to Me

For the first time ever on theguysfrom.com, here is the December Apple Music Playlist, and the December '17 Spotify Playlist! I decided that, rather than making myself crazy with a hybrid list between the two months (and thanks to the fact that I did a feature-full month) I would put this one together, which just means that the January playlist will be a tad shorter than most thanks to the TGF Top 50 Songs of 2017 (with the in countdown order Apple Music TGF Top 50 Songs of 2017 as Well as the Spotify TGF Top 50 Songs of 2017 playlists).

And as always, you can check out the December Spotify List here:

ICYMI (somehow) here are the November Apple Music Playlist October 2017 Apple Music PlaylistSeptember 2017 Apple Music Playlist August 2017 DSD Playlist July 2017 DSD PlaylistJune 2017 DSD Playlist, May 2017 DSD Playlist DSD Playlist - Apr 17DSD Playlist - Mar 17 , and there's also one kicking around for DSD Playlist - Feb 17 too!

Not to mention the fact that we totally also have a June '17 Spotify List, a July '17 Spotify List, an August '17 Spotify List, the September 2017 Spotify Playlist, October '17 Spotify Playlist, and November Spotify Playlist too!

If you're looking for me to add these lists somewhere beyond Apple Music and Spotify (or you want some of the old lists on Spotify), you're going to have to convince me (hard) by chatting with me here, or on Twitter

If you're looking for more great music, are late to the party, or just want more theguysfrom.com in your day, here is the Apple Music playlists for:

Apple Music Playlist for the Top 20 Songs of 2016

There are other (earlier) playlists available for you if you check older "Tuesday Tunes" articles, or search on Apple Music itself.

See you again next week with another new song!

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.

Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
