DSD July 7, 2017: "Dots N' Dashes" - Soultanz

Shaun Cordingley

Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.

Dots N' Dashes - Soultanz

Seattle's Jared Rubens and Shayhan Mashayekh make up Soultanz, an effortlessly cool R&B/Soul duo who recently released their debut album called Tangents and it is pretty damn great.

Check out one of my favourite tracks, "Dots N' Dashes" below:

What I really appreciate about "Dots N' Dashes" is the fact that it combines an almost...jazz aesthetic in it's construction, and even its sound, but combines that with elements of R&B, and even a little bit of hip hop all together into a song that is very intricate without getting fussy. It's clean, and very well produced, and allows Mashayekh's vocals to just move across the flute and percussion like smoke wafting through the hippest underground lounge where you feel like you need to be listening to music like Soultanz.

I know that "Dots" might not be up your alley (as it's improvisational-style 'horn' can be distracting if that's not your bag), but even then I do recommend checking out Tangents for a lot of mellow, chic R&B/Soul, some even flowing further into the realms of hip hop, or even a chillwave/ambient electro. Another personal favorite of mine is "Afterthot", or even their earlier single "Zonin' Out" which even has a bit of a Sublime feel.

Here's the June 2017 DSD Playlist! We're only missing one track this month (as is tradition)! This months list was actually one of the harder ones for me to put together into something that feels (at least sort of) cohesive...I'm not sure why, but I am happy with the way it turned out in the end!

ICYMI (somehow) here are the May 2017 DSD Playlist DSD Playlist - Apr 17DSD Playlist - Mar 17 , and there's also one kicking around for DSD Playlist - Feb 17 too!

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.

Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
