DSD July 11, 2017: "Ivy League" - Age Champion

Shaun Cordingley

Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop":'s song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.

Ivy League - Age Champion

Brisbane-based indie rock trio Age Champion released their debut EP Coming of Age earlier this year, and it features a lot of high-tempo, banging rock, but the song that caught me the most off guard, and thus appears here on the Daily Song Drop is "Ivy League"

Check the track out below (and get ready for some creepy baby art):

I really appreciate what Age Champion did with "Ivy League" as it is a long track (especially for modern indie rock) that actually progresses through different stages--early on you get more of a light ballad feel, which is excellently layered to build toward a burst of more uptempo rock, only to fold those two together into a fun, hard rock song by the end. I think "Ivy League" is excellently thought out and produced, as every part works together to take us through a journey of a rock song, and that's not easy to achieve.  A band like Age Champion, who exudes a lot of energy in their music could easily be swept along by it into producing only similar, uptempo tracks, but in "Ivy League", they managed to rein in the energy and leave it all bubbling under the surface, and in the process created a really great indie rock track.

If you enjoy "Ivy League" and are looking for more uptempo/heavy rock from Age Champion, check out the rest of the Coming of Age EP.

Here's the June 2017 DSD Playlist! We're only missing one track this month (as is tradition)! This months list was actually one of the harder ones for me to put together into something that feels (at least sort of) cohesive...I'm not sure why, but I am happy with the way it turned out in the end!
I've also heard you, and here it is: theguysfrom playlists are now available on Spotify! You can find us by looking for theguysfrom on Spotify, click on this link for the June '17 Spotify List...I will also embed the last months' playlist on every Friday DSD.

Come on back tomorrow for our next Song of the Day!

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.

Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
