Throwback Tracks -- April 12, 2018

David R. Smith

You guys, as of this coming out, my first year of classes is officially done! (Well... nearly; this drops at 11am MST and I don't finish class until 12:00. But close enough!)

In theory, this means more time to try and write these articles early. But that's just theory. We're all realists here. We know the score. I say I'll have more time, but lord knows that next Wednesday at 2pm, I'll be scrambling to get next Thursday's TBT done. Because that's what happens.

Anyway. Here we are with another week and here's more music!

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any of these songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new (*cough*) and different retro music, or re-expose them to things they may have forgotten about.

At the top of each section, will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website (if possible...which is totally hit and miss with oldies), so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.

Three Little Birds - Bob Marley

BOB MARLEY(LEGEND) THREE LITTLE BIRDS (WITH LYRICS) Lyrics: Dont worry about a thing, cause every little thing gonna be all right. Singin: dont worry about a thing, cause every little thing gonna be all right!

This song brought to you by one of my students. Indirectly, of course. We were in class the other day and he was playing Redemption Song by Mr. Marley and I realized I hadn't added any Bob in here, ever. I considered Redemption Song, because I love it. But this one just fit my mood more today. So that's why we get this one.

For years and years and years, I didn't know this was the name of this song. It's different from Baba O'Reilly in the sense that this one at least has the title of the song in the lyrics, but you'd think considering how many times he says "Don't worry about a thing," or "Every little thing gonna be alright," that either one of those titles would be the name of the song. But clearly it's not. Weird.

Admittedly, I don't know a ton about Bob Marley's music beyond his singles. I'm not huge into reggae, really. But I do love Bob. Some of his songs remind me of my first trip to Mexico, but he's also got just a chill feel about him and, considering my mood right now, it's pretty fitting.

Alone - Heart

Music video by Heart performing Alone.

I feel like Heart might be setting the record for most appearances on Throwback Tracks. I don't know for sure and am not sure how to actually figure that out beyond literally going through every TBT from the past 3 years and who wants to do that?

But there's a reason for their chronic appearances; they're great. I feel like they're high on the ranks of one of my favourite bands. Every single of theirs (and really, every song of theirs I hear) I really dig. Maybe it's the Seattle effect?

This song ranks up there as one of the best ones they've ever written. Its lyrics are haunting. Now; I may not be able to interpret all lyrics and poems, but this one screams to me of a longing for somebody who doesn't know she loves him. And that breaks my heart. Because I know of what she sings.

One could claim that this is either a love song or not a love song, depending on how you interpret the lyrics. Either way, it's gorgeous and terrific.

For Your Love - The Yardbirds

For Your Love - Yardbirds

This one is definitely a love song, even though it's not of a romantic, ballad type feel. It's just some 60s rockers singing about what they would do in order to be loved by somebody and I can dig it.

This is likely the most famous song by the Yardbirds. It has that quintessential 60s psychedelic feel to it and is a fine example of why the band was so popular. They just rock!

I think I said it last time I talked about this band, but really, any group that at one point or another had Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck has to be an indication of a pretty solid group.

What I find most interesting about this song (and this is straight from Wiki, so not knowledge I had prior to this) is that while likely their most famous song, this is one that Eric Clapton had very little to do with. He only plays in the middle. Who'd have thought??

Then He Kissed Me - The Crystals*

*I did find a link to their website, but it looked a bit dodgy. You can visit it here if you really want but I would say proceed with caution.

THIS IS THE ORIGINAL UPLOAD !!!!! so far the audio has been lifted and used on 2 other peoples channel :-/ NOTE the video footage isnt then he kissed me But as no footage of the girls sing that is avalible, the footage used is just to represent the girls instead of a black screen.

I was going to use the song Da Do Run Run, also by the Crystals, but then discovered they sang this song too. And this song will forever remind me of Goodfellas and the 2 and a half minute steadycam shot

I heard a guy once say that many scenes are fitted with music after the shots are done, but Martin Scorsese already has the idea of what songs he wants to use in the scenes. This one definitely seems like Scorsese knew what he wanted. The timing is perfect and the song itself fits so well with the scene. It's so, so good. The man is clearly a genius!

Incense and Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock

Domain of Strawberry Alarm Clock

I have seen various pop cultury things that have used this song. But mostly it stands out from the Simpsons Episode, Weekend At Burnsie's, where Homer smokes pot to help his eyes. As that whole episode was a tip of the hat to the 60s and the music, it seemed pretty fitting that this song was used.

I don't know why I stumbled down the psychedelic rabbit hole today, but I'm not upset about it. I really dig this song; I love the lyrics "Who cares what games we choose, little to win and nothing to lose" (among others...)

This song is interesting to me: I never really "grew up with it" in the sense that it certainly wasn't ever played on my parents' stereo, and yet it always felt familiar to me. Maybe it's because of its random use in pop culture. Maybe because it's the familiar face of pop music, or maybe I just liked it my first time listening to it, that it just felt like something I'd known my entire life. I don't know which, if any of these options are the correct ones. What I do know, however, is that it's a great song and now we can all listen to it!
