DSD April 7, 2017: "New" - Family Friends

Shaun Cordingley

Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.

New - Family Friends

This week has been tinged with all sorts of 90s influences, and today's "New" by London/Melbourne based Brother-Sister indie duo Family Friends fits in like a glove. Off of their second EP Look the Other Way, "New" is a hazy indie grunge track that feels like they listed a bunch of their favorite 90s songs, and figured out an amazing way to fit all of them together into something that is wholly new, and completely their own.

Check out "New" below:

I love the guitar in "New", as it reminds me of so many things at the same time,  but the track is not just some sort of nostalgia monster: it sweeps along, building and falling through waves of energetic, indie rock bursts into a really excellent track that has just that right balance between melancholy and tempo that keeps the song in your head for days.

Which is why I'm sharing it on a Friday: so "New" can live in your DSD-loving head for the weekend.

Look the Other Way is a solid EP,  and if you enjoyed "New" you really should check the rest of it out. I'm particularly fond of the title track myself, which switches the sound up, trending more into retro-rock/pop.

Oh so close to a complete list for the DSD Playlist - Mar 17 , but that's alright...there is over 80 minutes of indie awesomeness available for you right now....not to mention...in case you somehow missed it, here is last months DSD Playlist - Feb 17
Plus, if you're interested, there is also an  Apple Music Playlist for the Top 20 Songs of 2016, where I put together my favourite tracks from last year.

Remember, if you want me to put these playlists on other services (like Spotify), let me know on Twitter (I've linked it below)

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.

Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
